Résumé
This photo-identification catalogue includes images and associated data for the individual type-D killer whales involved in depredation (removing fish) from Patagonian toothfish longlines around the Crozet and Kerguelen Islands (French Subantarctic Islands), Marion/Prince Edward Islands (South African Subantarctic Islands) and southern Chile between 2003 and 2024. Individuals documented in the southern Indian Ocean (Crozet, Kerguelen, Marion/Prince Edward Islands) are portrayed on pages 4-49 and individuals documented in the southeastern Pacific Ocean (southern Chile) are portrayed on pages 53-68.
All individuals have alphanumeric designations beginning with CD for those photo-identified in the southern Indian Ocean and just D for individuals photo-identified in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. In each case the letter is followed by three digits to indicate the order in which the individual was first identified. All individuals are represented by the most recent high-quality photographs of the dorsal fin, saddle patch and eye patches for left and right sides, whenever available. Photographs of individuals are displayed on a two-page spread alongside others in their social unit, if confirmed (for frequently encountered whales) or otherwise assumed (for infrequently encountered whales). Social units were designated by the ID of the oldest female of the group (whether alive or deceased) for those that were frequently encountered or by the ID of the first identified female for other units. Other individuals were displayed by sex and age class.
Additional information provided alongside names and identification photographs include the sex of individuals (with symbols ♀ or ♂, when known) as well as maternal relationships inferred from observed associations between mother and young offspring. In such cases, solid lines are used to link a female to its offspring. The birth years for individuals are provided when known, approximate (~) or less than or equal to (≤). The tables at the end of the catalogues for individuals in the southern Indian Ocean and southeastern Pacific Ocean provide the name of the photographer and date each identification photograph used in catalogue was taken or n/a to indicate cases where images were not available.
