Abstract
Written by Thierry Chambert and Aurélien Besnard for WP2R2 of MAPE project. Assessing the impact of collisions at the population level is a crucial endeavor to better understand the consequences of wind energy development on avian species. In this briefing note, we review the two main existing assessment methods: the Potential Biological Removal (PBR) and population projections. We present the technical and philosophical limitations of the PBR method, which make it unreliable in the context of wind farm impact assessments. The approach based on population projections is much more relevant. We discuss its strengths and weaknesses, and provide a framework built upon this method to quantify the impact of collisions on bird populations.
