Imagine a plant that has provided food, shade, and inspiration to human civilizations for over 7,000 years, shaping life across the deserts of West Asia and North Africa (Tengberg, 2012). Thisplant, the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.), has helped human communities adapt and thrive in those arid regions. The date palm has long been a staple food through its fruits?dates (figure 1),which have sustained communities with their rich nutritional content and flavor. Today, its cultivation yields over 10 million tons of dates annually (FAOstats, 2023). Beyond its fruits, the datepalm provides essential materials for building and crafting, with all of its parts used in daily life. Most importantly, it offers critical shade, forming a protective canopy that creates a microclimatesupportive of other crops, sustaining agriculture and making it indispensable in oasis farming systems. Far more than just a crop, the date palm is a symbol of resilience, adaptation, andcontinuity.
