Abstract
This article describes the tragic capture and slaughter of a Trichechus manatus in Fort-Liberté, highlighting the major challenges facing marine conservation in Haiti. The event highlights the lack of awareness, socio-economic difficulties, poor governance and pervasive insecurity that undermine conservation efforts. The authors stress the need for a holistic approach that integrates education, economic alternatives and biodiversity management to effectively protect threatened species while improving local livelihoods.
