Abstract
Fishing is everywhere in New Caledonia. Around the islands, in the words exchanged and in customary rituals. Fishing feeds people. Customary fishingfeeds relations between clans. It helps build an identity. It is the reason for being for the sea clans. Board the canoe and observe! On the way, you’ll discover what the sea clans fish for, who they fish for, the place reserved for each of them, how these forms of fishing have travelled down through the generations, and how they continue to exist even when no longer practised.
