This course focuses on the measurement of mechanical properties at the nanoscale using atomic force microscopy (AFM) indentation. It will build upon the fundamental results from the previous course on nanoindentation, extending them to the mechanical interaction between an AFM tip and a material’s surface, while taking into account surface effects such as adhesion. The operating principle, calibration, and implementation of the most commonly used AFM modes today (whose principles and names may have varied and diversified over time, with similar modes existing across different manufacturers) for measuring this interaction and generating maps (at least) of the indentation modulus will be described: Force-Volume, Contact Resonance (CR-AFM), Peak Force Quantitative Nanomechanics (PF-QNM), and Bimodal AFM.
