Groundwater abstraction by households and farmers has significantly increased during the last three decades in France. Regulation and economic instruments in place have not allowed controlling this trend. Following a description of the current situation, this paper presents new instruments that can be implemented to improve groundwater management. It analyses their acceptability by stakeholders and farmers in a particular case study: the multilayer aquifer of Roussillon in Southern France. Adapted from the source document.
