To investigate the molecular mechanisms behind inherited prion diseases, Lehmann and Harris constructed stably transfected Chinese hamster ovary cells that express mouse prion proteins homologous to two human prion proteins associated with Creutzfeldt-Hakob disease. Results provided the first evidence that a molecule with properties reminiscent of infectious prion proteins can be generated de novo in cultured cells.
