Adolescents requiring specialized follow-up are often managed in university pediatric wards. As sexual health is a key component of overall well-being, specialized pediatricians play a crucial role in providing appropriate support. Literature reveals significant gaps between scientific recommendations and actual pediatric practices. Barriers related to practitioners, adolescents, or logistics often hinder adequate sexual health care for these patients. Explore the issues, practices, and barriers to approaching and managing questions related to sexual health among adolescents treated in the pediatric department of Montpellier University Hospital, and propose local prospects for improvement. A qualitative study was conducted from November 2023 to March 2024, through semi-structured interviews with seven pediatricians from various subspecialties. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using an inductive, open, step-by-step coding approach, with double reading and triangulation after each interview. Pediatricians reported issues regarding their role in addressing sexual health, both as part of routine care and in managing chronic conditions. Multiple barriers hinder this involvement, including physician-related challenges (discomfort, perceived illegitimacy, lack of training, intimate nature of the topic), adolescent-related obstacles (taboo, fear of causing embarrassment), gender dynamics, parental presence, fragile or overly close care relationships, logistical constraints (time limitations, overly specialized consultations), and the lack of a local adolescent health policy. Proposed perspectives included adolescent-focused consultations, targeted training for pediatricians, access to educational materials, and anchoring these approaches into routine care.Conclusion: This study highlights the complexity of addressing adolescent sexual health in pediatrics and underscores the need for in situ training and dedicated adolescent consultations.
