Résumé
Based on the French-Japanese KAIKO program, we previously showed that the junction between the Japan andKuril trenches coincided with a 20 km reentrant of the landward wall. This paper demonstrates that asubductingvolcano produced this indentation. Four types of data lead to this conclusion: Sea beam cartography,single-channelseismic profiles, magnetism and seafloor survey using Nautile submersible. A 3-dimensional model of the volcano, obtained on the basis of the magnetic anomalies, lead to the following size: height=1.8 km, diameter= 30 km. Itssummit is located at the northwest corner of the reentrant and corresponds to the mid-slope terrace observed at5,800 m. Its southeastflank is the lower slope of the main landward scarp, and consequently, the main thrustcan be drawn just above the seamount, that is to say more than 1 km above the base ofthe landward slope.
