Abstract
Stuttering is a speech disorder primarily characterized by disfluencies such as prolongations, repetitions, and blocks. Previous studies have highlighted specific articulatory behaviors during these disfluencies, including supraglottic movements. However, there is no consensus in the literature regarding the coordination of speech movements during stuttering moments. Hence, the aim of this article is to provide new insights into coarticulation during stuttering-like disfluencies by examining (1) the constriction magnitude of fricative consonants and vowels, and (2) the contact magnitude of stop consonants as indicators of coarticulation. Real-time magnetic resonance imaging data, combined with audio recordings that were de-noised after data acquisition, were used to observe the midsagittal plane of a 30-year-old native French speaker who stutters. The main results show a greater constriction for disfluent fricatives and vowels. Additionally, stop consonants were produced with larger contact magnitude during stuttering-like disfluencies compared with fluent speech. This observation suggests differences in coarticulation strategies between fluent and disfluent speech in stuttering.
