'Through Southern Europe, millions of families live in poverty while unemployment rates exceed 25% in Greece and Spain, and approaching 15% in Portugal (...), while teacher salaries, nurses and other public employees are cut and businesses in unprecedented numbers go bankrupt. The suicide rate in Greece has doubled during the last three years' (Hall, 2013, p. 24). The opening remarks of Peter Hall explaining the financial, economic and social crisis Europe is one of many illustrations worried observations have multiplied in recent months and years to highlight the events that this situation seems to have surfaced in a manner specific to South Europe.
