An election campaign is not only the time when different political representations of the world are displayed in competition on the electoral market. Il is also a key moment in the reassurance and perpetuation of the legitimate political order, notably in the distinction between the professionals of politics and the citizens who are only momentarily active, the distinction, in other words, between the sacred and the profane in politics. In this perspective, the notion of ritual becomes a precious analytical tool for the way it can theorise the staging of political discourse. This staging comprises repetitive and routine activities taking place in kinds of sanctuaries where politics are placed outside the daily life of the profane in order to acquire greater legitimacy : a notion of unhumdrumness, undailiness. The diffusion of political discourse, monopolised by a handful of orators, seems to be effective only when staged in places which are specifically equipped for its promotion.
