Abstract
French municipal election in 2001 have shown, beyond few spectacular exceptions, a rather high level of political stability. This article at first identifies the main reasons for such a stability, and then explains why these reasons play a growing role in the local political live. Two models are distinguished : the fief and the bastion. Local political configurations tends nowadays to favour the first one.
