Chloroplast (ct) and mitochondrial (mt) DNAs have been isolated from three somatic hybrids regenerated after fusion between protoplasts of
Medicago sativa and
Medicago falcata. The restriction patterns indicated that the three somatic hybrids each contains only one of the two parental ctDNAs whereas their mtDNA is different from either of the parental mtDNAs: it contains new bands, not found in either of the parental lines and an assortment, which is different for each hybrid, of several bands specific to
M. sativa of
M. falcata. The new bands indicate that recombination of mitochondrial genomes, which takes place as a result of protoplast fusion in Solanaceae, Cruciferae and Compositae, also occures in Leguminoseae.
