Résumé
This paper deals with the role of emotions in altruistic preferences. We study the influence of incidental emotions on prosocial behaviors through individuals' giving to environmental non-governmental organizations. The methodology relies on behavioral economics. We use the dictator game with emotion induction through picture viewing. We show that emotions alter significantly generosity. The situation in which generosity is the lowest is the one where individuals are exposed to a picture inducing a positive emotion with regards to the environment (contextualized). Furthermore, a gender effect arises regarding negative emotions according to their contextualization: men are proved to be significantly more generous while the negative emotion is contextualized.
