Abstract
Cone snails are remarkable marine animals that have evolved tools to survive and feed under the sea, regardless of the predator or prey they might encounter. Their predatory and defense venoms contain hundreds of bioactive peptides including the ω-conotoxin ziconotide, known as the first therapeutic conotoxin used in the treatment of intense chronic pain, particularly in the case of pharmacoresistance to recommended analgesic treatments such as morphine. This article describes the mode of action of ziconotide and highlights the other cone snail venom compounds with therapeutic potential for treating pathological pain.
