According to the Court of Justice, EU law which emphasizes animal welfare and prohibits slaughter without stunning except for religious sacrificial rites does not preclude stricter national provisions requiring a reversible stunning process for ritual slaughter. The essence of the freedom of the most orthodox Jewish and Muslim believers remains preserved by this less traumatic slaughter technique for both the animals and their defenders.
