Abstract
Foreign body ingestion is frequently observed in children aged 6 months to 4 years, a time when exploration of their environment is essential to their development. The majority of foreign objects passes through the gastrointestinal tract without causing injury and can be easily managed. However, some objects, including button batteries, magnets, and sharp or pointed objects can cause significant damage if not recognised and managed in an appropriate and urgent manner. While coins are the most commonly ingested foreign body, button batteries and neodymium magnets are receiving particular attention due to their increasing incidence and associated morbidity. The indication for endoscopic extraction and the timing of its realisation according to the nature of the foreign body and its location have been specified and diffused by the European and American specialised societies. The prevention of foreign body ingestion in children remains essential and should be considered as a public health priority, especially for button batteries and magnets.
