Acute pelvic pain is a frequent complaint of patients in the emergency room and can be secondary to a variety of disorders. However, by excluding obstetrical complications, it remains only few surgical gynaecologic emergencies: ectopic pregnancy, hemorrhagic ovarian cysts, ovarian torsion and complicated pelvic inflammatory disease (tubo-ovarian abscess and peritonitis). Clinical findings and imaging modality, ultrasonography in 1st choice in this young population, allow accurate diagnosis. Imaging findings are directly correlated to surgical laparoscopic observations. This paper will review key diagnostic findings and adequate therapeutic orientation and practice about these 4 urgent conditions. (C) 2015 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
