Abstract
We reviewed different models which have been developed for predicting tree failure to wind loading, placing a special emphasis on mechanistic models. The decision support tool, ForestGALES, which incorporates such a mechanistic model, was then chosen to include Maritime pine growing in the silviculture conditions of the Landes de Gascogne region, SW France. To adjust the species dependent relationships for Maritime pine, winching tests were used to determine the mechanical resistance of root anchorage to podzolic soil conditions and wind exposure. A connection was then carried out between ForestGALES and the simulation platform, CAPSIS. This link allows us to use the Maritime pine growth model to provide the stand characteristics needed as input to ForestGALES, and thus simulate the wind resistance of a stand according to a multitude of forestry scenarios. The possible use of this tool is then discussed with regard to recommendations for forest managers. We also outline the limits and advantages of this type of model, and consider its future evolution taking into account the aspect of risk management.
