Résumé
Chagas disease, one of the most significant parasitic diseases affecting humankind, remains a major public health problem across much of Latin America. Furthermore, due to transmission via blood transfusions, it now poses a threat to populations beyond its traditional range. Despite substantial research in areas such as immunology, genomics, population genetics, and pharmacology, no radical cure is currently available. Existing drugs are unsatisfactory, and many cases of drug resistance have been reported. Given this concerning situation, control strategies must also involve social interventions. This introductory article for the special section “Chagas Disease” in the journal presents the argument that a multidisciplinary approach—integrating biological and social sciences—is urgently needed to achieve effective disease control.
