Created in 2008, the Oil Palm Genome Projects (OPGP) International Consortium is an association of fourteen private and public entities for developing genomic tools in oil palm. We describe main guidelines and results of its innovative researches conducted in the cultivated oil palm, as well as in the South-American wild relative E. oleifera species useful in interspecific selection. A huge amount of information was generated including transcriptomic sequences, genetic maps, candidate genes of key agronomic traits, own whole genome sequence (WGS) of oil palm and tight DNA markers of any gene of agronomic interest. Most results obtained on large germplasms and multiparent breeding systems accelerate the validation and use of OPGP tools for marker-assisted selection. In particular, an accurate genomic selection method in oil palm is set up to accelerate the creation of better-improved varieties, more yielding in palm oil and resistant to major diseases. The research roadmap of the OPGP members is in fact a long-term plan foreseeing totally novel oil palm varieties, also making use favorable genes of E. oleifera, devoted to intensify at lower costs the palm oil yield, quality and stability in various agroclimatic environments through the implementation of operating systems respectful of the environment. respectful of the environment.
