Better information to prevent toxic shock syndrome. Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is caused by the passage of a toxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus into the blood circulation. The diversity of organs affected and symptoms explain the late diagnosis and potential severity of TSS. Its occurrence is linked to the misuse of menstrual tampons.
