Abstract
The aim of this text is to present the process and results of an investigation into a group ofaccountants in the chemical industry, using the psychodynamics of work method, and to thinkabout the central place of the quality of collective deliberation. The text presents both thetheoretical framework and methodology of the psychodynamics of work, and a case study. Theaccounting team we analyzed found itself in a hostile and tense relational context, with few or nomeetings to discuss work. Following a presentation of the context of the request and its analysis, the article is structured into two parts: the first deals with recent changes in work organizationrelating to various forms of flexibilization: change of business model, hierarchy, software, openspace layout, along with an increase in the number of temporary workers and external serviceproviders and a reduction in the number of employees. The second part of the paper presentswhat happens in this context: deliberation is undermined, and defensive postures become moreradical. This leads to difficulties in terms of cooperation and health. The text highlights the linkbetween the quality of collective discussion about work and the capacity to think about the linkbetween these developments regarding flexibilization and hyperactive defensive behaviors. Themost striking outcome about this field experience is how ways for transformation were revealedas collective thinking about work improved.
