1. The accumulation of
241Am in lysosomes within the digestive gland cells of the Gastropod
Littorina litlorea exposed to radiolabelled water was investigated by isolation and purification of these organelles following two different procedures.

2. These methods have shown a low level (2.5%) of
241Am in tertiary lysosomes, and a high level (ca 50%) in secondary lysosomes.

3. There was 13–33% of
241Am present in the cytosol, after gel permeation chromatography; the metal analysis by atomic absorption showed no correlation between the
241Am peak and the cadmium and copper peaks, corresponding to low molecular weight metallothioneins.

4. The nuclide was bound to high molecular weight compounds after gel permeation chromatography of detergent extracts of lysosomes and plasma membranes.
