Résumé
Speech therapists have a key role within the multidisciplinary teams in hospitals. However, this profession still seems unrecognized by a majority of the general public and health professionals. This is partly due to the lack of speech therapists in hospitals. Indeed, 1,876 in 25,607 speech therapists in France work in hospitals (DREES, 2019), whereas the majority of them worked there before the 1970s. Nevertheless, the demand for care has not diminished since. Few investigations have been made on the subject in the literature. The rare existing studies focus on certain categories of medical and other paramedical professionals than speech therapists. This is a relatively young profession, constantly evolving, and it still needs to make its own place among health professionals and the general population. We asked ourselves whether the speech therapist profession was well known by health professionals in hospitals thanks to a questionnaire. The lack of knowledge and informativeness is an issue that indirectly impacts the patient, the entourage and the exchange of information within multidisciplinary teams. Our objective was to provide an inventory and a comparison of how speech therapy is seen by medical and paramedical professionals in hospitals. The figures collected during our study highlight a lack of knowledge about speech therapy among these professionals as well as a marked disparity between them.
