Résumé
Common mental disorders are frequently referred to general practitioners. In France, access to private psychologists is difficult, as they usually charge a fee. The Pôle Santé Chambéry association offers such care without advance payment. Despite these facilitating conditions, some patients refuse them. The aim of the research is to explore the causes of patients' refusal of psychological care, even though it is free. Method: semi-directed interviews of 12 patients and 4 professionals were performed between February and June 2023 and analyzed with qualitative method. Results: the causes identified by patients are linked to their life trajectories or negative experiences with psychologists. Patients have a fatalistic attitude to mental health, doubting efficacy, distrusting psychologists, and fearing medication. They perceive a mismatch between their needs and available care, and question the whole healthcare system. In response, they adopt strategies that bypass a mental health system deemed stigmatizing. General practitioners say they are limited by time and remuneration constraints. Avenues for promoting global health include outreach, improving health literacy, inter-professional teamwork, and partnerships with local associations. Discussion: to support patients in improving their mental health, it is essential to deconstruct collective representations and encourage patients' views consideration from a global health perspective. Conclusion: considering psychological support in all its forms, as part of a mental health promotion dynamic, can reduce stigma and help improve global health.
