Patients with a confirmed infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 have a highter incidence of venous thromboembolic disease than the general population. These patients have macrothrombosis due to hypercoagulability and micro-thrombosis in the lung due to direct vascular and endothelial damage caused by the virus. Systemic inflammatory response syndrome is the main risk factor and a major contributor to COVID-19 associated coagulopathy. D-dimer test and venous Doppler ultrasound are key medical tests for diagnosing patients. After patients are diagnosed with venous thromboembolism, management is based on curative anticoagulation for at least 3 months and a follow-up care plan. In order to decrease the incidence of venous thromboembolic events and reduce mortality, the Perioperative Hemostasis Interest Group and the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Study Group have made proposals regarding thromboprophylaxis of venous thromboembolic disease in patients with COVID-19. These proposals are based on randomized and retrospective clinical trials conducted between January 2020 and February 2021. They are an assistance for prescribing physicians and they are frequently reevaluated based on new published data.
