Résumé
For many people nowadays, regardless of age or ethnic origin, hyperpigmentation of the skin is a major beauty concern. They cause a psychological burden, which is all the more acute in today's society driven by social media promoting a perfect uniform complexion as the beauty standard. Consequently, the cosmetics industry is constantly innovating in its quest to meet the growing demand from patients affected both aesthetically and psychologically by these skin disorders. As healthcare providers, pharmacists play a crucial role in improving the overall well-being of these patients. However in order to succeed, they must first understand the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the different types of skin hyperpigmentation and their inherent causes (sun exposure, drug treatment, trauma to the skin, dermatological pathologies, hormonal disorders). In-depth knowledge of the various strategies for treating these skin conditions (topical cosmetic/medicinal approaches and dermatological procedures) will also enable them to provide adequate and personalized advice to improve not only the complexion of patients but most importantly the day-to-day lives of those affected by these disorders.
