Communication of medical diagnoses is deeply integrated in the daily lives of general practitioners. The quality of information shared directly impacts subsequent care and the quality of the patient-physician relationship. Despite the availability of specific medical training since 2001, a majority of junior doctors in general practice (IMG) report inadequate skills and confidence in sharing medical diagnosis with patients and their families. Objective: this study aims to assess the needs and expectations of IMGs for their medical training in communicating medical diagnoses. Method: a preliminary quantitative approach was employed to assess the state of existing training. Subsequently, a thematic analysis was conducted highlight the expectations of general practice interns for this training. Results: 43% of IMGs had not received formal training before sharing medical diagnoses during their internships. They acknowledge the importance of such training and express eagerness to participate. This training positively impacts their perception and ability to manage emotions during disclosures. Given its uniqueness, this training should be conducted under good conditions and within a conducive environment. IMGs express their need to be trained early on and repeatedly throughout their medical education, with added complexity throughout the years and interactive simulations. These simulations should encompass a broad spectrum of scenarios, including various pathologies, patient demographics and disclosure settings. IMGs advocate for different speakers, including patients (testimonies, expert patients), and highlight the importance of supervision and peer sharing of experiences. Video transcription emerges as a relevant tool. IMGs express a need for specific training to effectively address extreme emotional reactions from patients. Conclusion: to our knowledge, this study represents the first attempt to explore the needs and expectations of IMGs regarding the training on the communication of medical diagnoses. Further research could delve into the post-internship needs regarding continuing education.
