Throughout this study, we looked at the misconceptions still conveyed by professionals to bilingual families, in order to improve the support they receive, but also the prevention carried out on this topic. To do so, we performed 44 interviews on a panel of bilingual families under the care of a speech therapist to gather their expectations, needs, and the advice they received from professionals. Obtained results show professionals still conveyed incorrect advice based on myth about bilingualism to families. The absence, or inadequacy of those advice leads to the patients feeling helpless and worried about sharing their language to their children. Indeed, they need support as well as recognition of minority languages. Those results were presented during a round-table discussion in collaboration with the Association de Prévention en Orthophonie de l’Hérault with the purpose of sharing information regarding bilingualism misconceptions, parental support from therapists, and ways of improvement for patient care. It appears that providing accurate advice to those bilingual population would result in a decrease of the misconceptions cultivated inside the families. Furthermore, it would allow them to enhance their relationship with their language and feel more supported by therapists, and thus elaborate a linguistic project that suits their needs.
