Résumé
According to several studies, many patients who are undergoing surgery experience anxiety and distress on the morning of surgery. This literature review investigates the impact of hypnosis on preoperative anxiety and postoperative pain in adult patients undergoing surgical procedures. Researches using relevant keywords were carried out on two scientific databases. Searches included 108 articles. 15 articles were selected in order to establish this literature review. The results were classified according to the effectiveness of hypnosis on five assessment criteria: anxiety, pain, use of medication, side effects of surgery and costs of surgical procedures. In conclusion, benefits of hypnosis on various surgically relevant outcomes were demonstrated. Hypnosis reduces anxiety and pain, reduces medication consumption, induces fewer side effects and reduces the costs associated with surgical procedures. These results suggest that hypnosis would be an important tool for patient care and could be performed by the Certified Operating Room Nurse.
