France is one of the world's biggest consumers of alcohol. Taking care of patientssuffering from alcoholism has become a public health issue. Indeed, alcoholconsumption causes significant damage to health, with the onset of illnesses such ascancer, liver disease and neurological disorders. The mobilization of all healthcareprofessionals is essential for effective care. Every year, various campaigns areorganized to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol. Pharmacists play a crucialrole in the fight against alcohol dependence. As proximity providers, pharmacists arethe most accessible to people and can intervene at every stage of the care process.Thanks to their close contact with patients, they can spot and detect the signs ofproblem drinking, and refer patients to appropriate health care structures andprofessionals. He can also provide preventive care, either directly at the counter, orthrough targeted one-to-one counseling interview (e.g. with pregnant women). Theyalso support patients during withdrawal and post-withdrawal, providing advice andregular follow-up during monthly prescription deliveries. Talk groups and other grouptherapies complete this support. To facilitate their mission, a number of tools havebeen developed (questionnaires, guides). Training courses are also beginning toexpand and multiply in order to better integrate dispensing pharmacists into thehealthcare network.
