The qualified operating room nurse works in a highly technical environment, requiring unfailing expertise. The training he has followed provides him essential skills to the practice of his profession. However, does he feel competent and legitimate within the work group at the end of his training? The objective of this research report is to highlight the path he takes to find and develop his place. The first part sets out the theoretical framework, drawing on major concepts such as competence, recognition, legitimacy and feelings of self-efficacy. The second part proposes a qualitative study to investigate the impact of training and experience on the construction of the professional. The results of this research underline the fact that training provides a structuring basis for the transformation of the professional, and that various experiences improve the professional throughout his evolution. Future research could focus on institutional strategies aimed at strengthening staff's sense of self-efficacy.
