Résumé
Alcohol consumption presents many health risks but remains widespread from adolescence to adulthood in many societies. In the first part of this work, we will evoke generalities such as types of alcoholic beverages, different perceptions about alcohol including the "French paradox" and mention the link between alcohol dependence, depression and COVID-19 disease. In the second part, we will address the metabolization of ethanol, the acetaldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency that characterizes "the Asian flush syndrome" and the intestinal dysbiosis related to alcohol. The third part deals with some of the consequences of alcohol abuse that I have chosen to treat, which are withdrawal syndrome, alcohol-related liver disease and nutritional deficiencies. The fourth and last part is devoted to the overall management of alcohol-dependent patients and/or with liver disease associated with alcohol and the role of the pharmacist in the accompaniment, the orientation and detection of potential interactions during concomitant use of drugs and alcoholic beverages. This section also discusses the prevention and risks of alcohol consumption among pregnant women, adolescents and the elderly.
