The experience of gynecological exams influences women's adherence to medical follow-ups. This study examines how self-insertion of the speculum could enhance this often perceived as intrusive and painful experience. Method: we adopted a qualitative method based on semi-structured interviews, recruiting adult women who had experienced self-insertion with the assistance of healthcare professionals in Occitanie. The data were anonymized, and a phenomenological inspired analysis allowed for the identification of conceptual categories. Results: the findings reveal that the experience of gynecological exams is frequently marked by apprehension and pain due to the intrusiveness of the speculum. Self-insertion offers patients greater control, reducing stress and promoting a better understanding of their bodies. A warm environment and empathetic reception from caregivers transform these moments into more serene and respectful experiences, allowing patients to regain confidence and autonomy in their care journey. This shift toward participatory medicine strengthens the relationships between caregivers and patients, valuing their choices and feelings. Conclusion: this study highlights the importance of self-insertion of the speculum, which allows patients to regain control and feel more confident during gynecological exams often perceived as intrusive. By promoting consent and autonomy, this approach improves communication between caregivers and patients, fostering a more humanizing and respectful care journey. Engaging patients more actively can not only enhance their satisfaction but also improve the quality of care provided.
