Maintaining a satisfactory level of physical activity (PA) after cardiovascular rehabilitation in coronary patients is a major public health issue. It is directly associated with a number of complications, including mortality. However, more than half of patients do not maintain the recommended level of physical activity over the long term. Cognitive-behavioural interventions involving healthcare professionals and patient participation are increasingly being advocated in education and research. We hypothesise that an intervention conducted by peers in association with healthcare professionals could help patients maintain a sufficient level of physical activity after taking part in a cardiovascular rehabilitation programme. Material and methods: we have designed a prospective, single-centre, randomised controlled trial conducted jointly by healthcare professionals and patients as expert peers.Patients will be enrolled at the end of a 4-week phase II cardiac rehab program after myocardial infarction and randomized in intervention or control group. We anticipate a drop-out rate of 10% in both groups, which means that 42 patients should be included in each group. The intervention will consist of two teleconsultations and one remote group workshop within six months conducted by a peer and a healthcare professional. The peers who will carry out the intervention are coronary patients who benefited from phase II cardiac rehab program with good compliance and who have been trained in motivational enhancement and cognitive behavioural therapies. The main objective is to evaluate the impact on physical activity levels measured by accelerometer six months after a cardiac rehabilitation program in coronary patients who have benefited from telemonitoring aimed at encouraging the maintenance of a satisfactory level of physical activity. The secondary objectives are to evaluate the impact of the intervention on clinical biological criteria and quality of life compared with the control group, and to determine the factors associated with maintaining a satisfactory level of physical activity in coronary patients.
