Résumé
Parents play a key role in how self-esteem develops in their child. A loving, confident and soothing environment allows the child to build his or her own identity, and develop a good image of him or herself. However, to announce a diagnostic of “learning disabilities”, “dysphasia”, and/or “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)” deeply shakes the child, his parents and the family dynamics up. This essay aims at taking stock of the perception parents have of their child’s self-esteem when he/she has been diagnosed with one or several learning disabilities, dysphasia and/or ADHD. We wondered if parents were conscious of the impact those diagnostics had on the self-esteem of their child. To this end, we have formulated and circulated a parental questionnaire. The results we came to enabled us to confirm this hypothesis: half of the responding parents are not fully aware of the psychological impact those disorders have on their child. We also noticed that the parents who understand this diagnostic are more conscious of its impact on self-esteem. In view of our various observations, we decided to create five information videos. In fact, parents’ training is essential to give the best support to their child, to reassure and help him/her keep a positive self-esteem.
