PSA Screening Cancer PSA Dépistage Cancer Prostate Médecine générale General practice
The benefit of prostate cancer screening in the general population remains debated, as the results of major studies on the subject are contradictory. French medical societies provide differing recommendations. The aim of our study is to analyze, within this context, the practices of general practitioners in Hérault regarding prostate cancer screening. Materials and methods: we conducted a descriptive cross-sectional quantitative study. A questionnaire was distributed to 1263 general practitioners practicing in the Hérault department. Results: the response rate was 12%. Ninety-four percent of the doctors surveyed reported practicing prostate cancer screening, with 50% doing so systematically and 44% individually. Women were found to screen as frequently as men. Rectal exams were performed by 48% of the doctors, with men performing them significantly more often than women. Thirty-nine percent of the doctors continued screening after the age of 75. Twenty four percent of doctors prescribed PSA tests without systematically informing the patient. Conclusion: most general practitioners perform prostate cancer screening. However, practices vary widely.
