Résumé
Bibliotherapy is an effective intervention in the management of depression. The aim of this review of litterature is to describe the media and methods used in the studies on this subject. After an initial selection of articles providing an overview of the use of books in depression, a second stage involved the selection of 45 studies whose media and methods were categorized and analyzed.Three types of support were found: psycho-educational manuals (including self help books), fiction books and a mixture of the two. Books based on Cognitive Behavioral therapy were the most frequently used, two in particular. Three categories of implementation were distinguished: unguided bibliotherapy, minimally guided bibliotherapy and guided bibliotherapy. The nature of the follow-up was described for each study. The methods employed point towards the practice of bibliotherapy with human accompaniment, even if minimal. It is necessary to pursue the evaluation of the different available media, including fiction. It would be interesting to study the mechanisms of psychic changes induced by reading. This could lead to the creation of bibliotherapy guides with evaluated books and their necessary accompaniment, opening the door to possible training for the practice of bibliotherapy in depression.
