Neonatal Brachial Plexus Palsy is a group of lesions of the brachial plexus diagnosed in the neonatal period, mainly due to mechanical trauma during delivery. The current challenge lies in early management and long-term follow-up in order to limit the conséquences on the upper limb function, autonomy and independence of patients. The functional impact varies according to the type of nerve damage, ranging from a minor proximal deficit to complete palsy of the upper limb making it unusable. It is still difficult at the diagnostic stage to establish a reliable prognosis for recovery. The same is true for the consequences this may have on the quality of life of the patients. Thus, the aim of this retrospective study is to observe whether there is a correlation between the stage of clinical severity and functional impact, and how this influences the quality of life of patients. This question is central in the management of this disease, allowing caregivers to orient their therapeutic strategy in order to best meet patients' expectations according to the evolution of their disease. Thus, at the end of this study, we found that the alteration in function correlated with the deficit in medial rotation (r = 0.64; p-value = 0.014). However, we did not find a strong correlation between loss of shoulder function and impairment of quality of life. It would seem that other parameters are involved, and evolve with age and the compensatory strategies put in place.
