Résumé
With the increase of palliative care cases in the emergency department and given the lack of knowledge from the medical profession in that field, it therefore seemed relevant to determine a training method in order to improve the medical care. Methodology: this research was carried out at the University Hospital Lapeyronie in Montpellier during one year. A pre and post medical intervention method was used in order to assess the learning effects of a one-hour supervised lecture to see if it could improve a resident’s skills and knowledge in palliative care cases in the emergency department. The inclusion criteria for the sample of this investigation was: all the residents who have done their internship in the emergency department of the University Hospital Lapeyronie in Montpellier between November 2022 and October 2023. The main criteria for evaluation was the skills’ improvement of the residents in palliative care and end of life situations in the emergency department. To assess this, we did a one-hour supervised lecture with the residents in the emergency department and then we marked their care during simulations sessions before and after the training. Results: during the first simulations session, we were able to make a comparison, using a quantitative method with an analysis of variance univariate, the average of the mark out of 20 of the residents depending on the different scenarios. The results of this research have shown a significant difference between the marks from the first simulations session and the marks from the second simulations session. Therefore, our research shows the skills and expertise’s improvement between the two sessions. Conclusion: this study has shown an improvement regarding the skills required in palliative care by the residents doing their internship in an emergency department thanks to a training method with supervised lectures. Furthermore, an assessment of the medical care in the form of simulation exercises has been done. The simulation is the future of training in the medical field, it would be interesting to carry out other studies putting this exercise at the heart of the methodology with a bigger sample on a bigger scale.
