Functional assessment and movement analysis in ankle osteoarthritis

Ankle osteoarthritis is mainly post-traumatic. It causes pain and restrictions in joint mobility, resulting in functional disabilities. The use of Xsens motion sensors makes it possible to model the joint mobility of subjects with ankle osteoarthritis and to compare it with that of healthy subjects. The use of foot orthotics is one of the first-line tools in the management of ankle osteoarthritis. Baropodometry assessment with the Runtime® mat provides information on the static and dynamic aspects of the foot when walking. Objective: the main objective is to describe the kinematic and spatio-temporal parameters provided by the Xsens motion sensors in patients with ankle osteoarthritis. The secondary objectives are to study the changes induced with the foot orthotics by the Xsens sensors and the Runtime® baropodometry device, to study the correlations between clinical parameters, the AOS questionnaire and the Xsens parameters, and to study the parameters with Runtime®. Method: ten patients with advanced ankle osteoarthritis were evaluated by clinical measurements and functional assessments according to a prospective recruitment, between December 2020 and June 2021. All movement measurements and analyses were performed on the same day for each patient, before and after the use of foot orthotics. Results: the average age of the patients was 59.2 years. The comparison of healthy subjects with our sample of patients highlighted the spatiotemporal variables for which the differences are significant. The foot orthoses do not appear to significantly correct the parameters evaluated with the inertial sensors in our sample of patients. There are certain correlations between the spatiotemporal parameters, the clinical picture and the AOS questionnaire. Conclusion: our study takes stock of the analysis of movement in ankle osteoarthritis using numerous parameters. Future studies are needed to explore the subject in greater depth.
