Abstract
If the use of voice and video over IP is working properly on a wireless network with only one access point, the QoS (Quality of Service) is altered on a wireless mesh network where each access point relays packets to the next one. Indeed, sharing the same radio channel over a large number of nodes that do not always detect the others makes it difficult to establish communications with good enough QoS. Because an experimental analysis with communication monitoring is very difficult, we proceeded with a simulation. In lack of adequate simulators because mesh network is a recent concept, the purpose of this thesis is to create, design and use a simulator based on Petri nets, to simulate the wireless mesh network communications. The improvements resulting from this study are intended to be implemented on an existing hardware to provide a transport service for voice and video over a wireless mesh network. The first simulations performed using this tool pointed out packet loss and jitter due to the lack of management of packet queues within intermediate access points. A modification of a parameter on the existing hardware resulted in a good improvement : an automation and network approach highlighted possible strategies for improvement of QoS required for voice and video communications.
