Abstract
This thesis aims to analyze the active tectonics and its structural heritage in the Central Alborz<br />- active mountain range in northern of Iran lining the South-Caspian basin - and to characterize the<br />seismic hazard in the area of Teheran, a fifteen million inhabitant metropolis, located on the southern<br />frontal thrust of the range. The methods that have been used are those of the morphotectonics and<br />the paleosismology (satellite images, aerial pictures, Digital Elevation Models, geomorphology,<br />geology of Quaternary, trenching). At first, a review of the geological and structural setting is drawn up.<br />The based on the analysis of the structures and their reactivation through the time, we propose a new<br />synthesis of Alborz paleogeography put in perspective of the convergence between Arabia and<br />Eurasia. The analysis of active faults kinematics, particularly in the internal domain of Central Alborz,<br />allows proposing a new geodynamic model of northern Iran – southern Caspian region. A first<br />assessment of the seismic hazard (faults,slip rates, magnitude and mean recurrence interval) is drawn<br />up for the area of Tehran.
