Palaeolimnological records are important for improving the understanding of past ecosystem responses and landscape sensitivity to abrupt climate change in Mediterranean montane systems. The recovery of long, continuous sediment sequences cores at Lake Sidi Ali (33° 03' N, 05° 00' W; 2,080m a.s.l.) in 2012 shows the great potential for investigation of past changes in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems on centennial timescales. Initial dating of bulk samples indicates sedimentary sequences of up to 25,000 yrs, and highlights a reservoir effect at the lake of up to 900 yrs. Current efforts are focused on developing a 14C chronology based on the dating of terrestrial pollen concentrates to constrain the timing of changes evidenced in multiproxy sedimentological and biological tracers.
