The prevalence of unruptured intracranialaneurysms in the general population, as reportedby a recent review [Wardlaw, 2000], rangesbetween 3% and 6.6%. However, the incidenceof ruptured aneurysms is low, withapproximately 0.5% per year, suggesting thatvery few aneurysms rupture. Clearly, newpatient-specific indexes predicting aneurysmrisk of rupture should be proposed, in order toguide therapeutic decision for unrupturedaneurysm.Previously, we showed that aneurismalpulsatility might be a relevant patient-specificpredictor of aneurysm risk of rupture [Sanchez,2013], as the pulsability showed to provideinformation on the degradation of themechanical properties of ruptured aneurismtissue. However, the biomechanical propertiesof healthy arteries of circle of Willis are poorlyreported. In this study, we attempted to identifythe biomechanical behavior of healthyintracranial artery taken from autopsiedsubjects.
