Understanding how forest growth responds to climate is essential for developing sustainable forest management under climate change. We analyzed the growth response to climate for 20 European tree species, using more than 70 000 National Forest Inventory observations (2005 – 2023). We modelled plot annual basal area increment as a function of climate variables, with a particular focus on the impact of summer constraints on growth reduction. Climate projections up to year 2100, under multiple climate scenarios - including the ones predicting the harshest climate conditions, provide insights into future forest productivity shifts and species-specific vulnerabilities. Our results highlight the key climatic drivers affecting growth for each species.
