People in coastal and island communities have depended on the sea for long before written records of scientific monitoring have existed. Our shared history as a seafaring species has resulted in 3 million shipwrecks worldwide and countless other maritime heritage sites. In contemporary times, urban ocean and island ecosystems form complex socio-ecological systems where ocean processes and human activities interact. Urbanization, climate change, and other anthropogenic pressures from land and sea have significantly altered coastal systems. Understanding anthropogenic interactions with the marine environment can benefit from a historical perspective, including elevating indigenous perspectives that are at risk of being lost or marginalized. This session aims to catalyze transformative approaches by convening researchers across oceanography, marine ecology, maritime archaeology, anthropology, and sociology. Studies should reflect the breadth of data sources available, including Traditional Ecological Knowledge, cultural artefacts, and empirical data. Breaking down barriers between the sciences and societal actors will help design sustainable governance systems to address current and future challenges.
